It started as a joke, but this sander became a family favorite over the past 8 years and has earned a permanent spot in my home workshop.

Sculpt Sander deals: any 2 sanders 15% off, any 3 sanders 25% off. Applied automatically in the cart, no code needed.

It takes 5" hook & loop sanding discs (I use old ones from my random orbit sander) and mounts to the front power hub of a KitchenAid stand mixer. It's slow enough that the kids love coming out to sand with me, but torquey enough for legit shaping work.

Slow & Torquey is great to avoid burning end grain!

Nerd features

  • 2 ball bearings tucked in the TPU sleeve for smooth operation and to prevent friction heat buildup
  • Stainless steel hardware, TIG-welded nut
  • 1/2" squishy pad for convex contours

What's included

  • 1 × 5" sander attachment (Cherry Red or Chocolate Brown — select the option)
  • 1 × squishy hook & loop pad
  • 1 × high quality vinyl KTG sticker!

Dust

The KitchenAid mixer doesn't have built-in dust collection (yet!) BUT the slow speed helps avoid flinging dust clear across the shop/house. Use with good ventilation or put an air filter box nearby as I do.

Usage tips

  • Clamp the mixer to your bench - sanding pressure will walk an unclamped mixer across the table.
  • Keep it slow. The power is in the torque, not the RPM.
  • Rotate and tilt the workpiece into the squishy pad to shape convex curves (see the demo video).

Compatibility

Mounts to the standard KitchenAid power hub, which is the same on every KitchenAid stand mixer. Tested on my K45SS and my wife's KSM150. If you have a Mini or a bowl-lift and want to confirm clearance before ordering, message me with your model number.

Which sandpaper?

Reuse your used sandpaper! When the grits aren't quite sharp enough for your random orbit sander, they work great for a high-torque application like this. To buy new, I get good quality discs from SuperGrit (most often Mirka Gold from SuperGrit); in a pinch, these 5" discs from Amazon give you an assortment to try.

Safety & disclaimers

This is a functional power tool attachment, not a toy, and not a children's product. Intended for adult use. Any use by a minor requires direct, hands-on adult supervision at all times.

Wear eye protection. Tie back long hair and remove loose clothing, gloves, and jewelry - rotating machinery can catch and pull them in. Keep hands clear of the spinning disc. Never leave the mixer running unattended.

Sanding produces airborne dust. Wood dust is a known respiratory irritant and carcinogen. Use with good ventilation, and clean the mixer thoroughly before any food preparation.
